Cythara V: History of the World through Guitar

A loved tradition returns to Whidbey on November 4, Cythara 4, where guests will take a journey through the history of the world according to the guitar. Andre Feriante and Troy Chapman perform on their personal collection of musical instruments with their informal and lighthearted style.

Andre and Troy will sample the flavors of multicultural music with 30 instruments from 5 continents spanning more than 5,000 years. Cythara 4 is an entertaining and educational production, featuring the most popular instrument in the world, the guitar! Cythara is an umbrella term for a range of stringed instruments of medieval and renaissance Europe. This group included lyres and harps, but also early long necked instruments with pear shaped bodies. These did not exist in a vacuum, of course, and were likely influenced by the oud, lute, and more. Ultimately, instruments called cythara evolved into the violin, viola, and the guitar.
