Mike McCurry capped a long career as political operative and spokesman in 1994 by becoming President Bill Clinton’s White House press secretary, a job he held through nearly four turbulent years that included the Whitewater investigation and the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Throughout his tenure as White House spokesman, McCurry received praise and appreciation for his forthrightness and humor with reporters, traits that weren’t always appreciated by his boss. McCurry comes to WICA on May 24 for Robert Merry’s political conversation series.

Before his White House tenure, McCurry held numerous political jobs in Washington, including State Department spokesman, press secretary to New York Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, and press secretary for the presidential campaigns of Ohio Senator John Glenn (1984), Arizona Governor Bruce Babbitt (1988) and Nebraska Senator Bob Kerrey (1992). Following his career in politics, he earned a master’s degree at the Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C., where he now teaches politics and religion. This career transformation was motivated in part, he says, by a conviction that religious values can save “the frozen tundra” of today’s politics. McCurry holds a bachelor’s degree from Princeton and a master’s degree from Georgetown.
